The extra distance is tough but here are some tips to make your long distance relationship work:

1- Set Ground Rules: You and your partner need to be clear on expectations during this long distance relationship. Make sure you discuss your level of commitment and be open and honest about your needs.

2- Communicate on a daily basis: Communication is crucial in a relationship, and it’s especially important in a long-distance relationships. It’s easy to talk about everyday happenings, but both partners inquiring about their partner’s feelings and expressing their own on a daily basis is what keeps communication meaningful. Fortunately, we have access to a variety of communication venues. Make sure you are updating your partner on your day to help you both feel connected.

3-Schedule regular date nights: Technology today makes it easier to have the same type of dates in long-distance relationships as couples do when they live in the same city. For example,

  • “Go to a movie” together by watching a movie at the same time and texting comments.
  • Play games together, such as “name that tune” or “21 questions.”
  • Schedule a phone, facetime, zoom or skype date to share desires or engage in sexy talk with each other.

4- Plan for the future together: Whether this involves your long term plans, or just the next day you will see each other, dates on the calendar are vital in long-term relationships. Having something to look forward to through tough days apart from each other helps keep your relationship positive and exciting. The hope of the future goes a long way and makes the one you love feel not quite so far away.
